Project story

QEG was engaged by Kellanova (Kellogg Aust. Pty Ltd) to replace the 1980s-vintage Shinwa SDC-P600ASS Cooling Tower 9 at the Botany manufacturing plant, which serves two condenser water chillers operating in duty/standby (one Smardt, one Carrier). Following a competitive process against the Kellanova specification, QEG was awarded the works and delivered a design-and-construct package supplying and installing a new 2-cell Marley NC Class Diamond Series crossflow cooling tower (NC8403NAN) in stainless steel, sized for 66 l/s per cell. Works included reuse of the existing galvanised steel sub-frame with structural modifications, all condenser water pipework connections, makeup water and overflow connections, reuse of the existing water treatment system, full cranage including airport-zone notification and tiger-tail rental on adjacent Ausgrid LV powerlines, road occupancy licensing, two consecutive day commissioning, and O&M handover. The project was delivered around the Kellanova annual plant shutdown in July 2025, compressed at short notice into a 10-day window with the new towers operating by 23 July 2025.
